I was excited and relieved to receive a call from Taryn today who is in charge of a women's refuge in Oxfordshire.
Excited because we were booking in the Yoga Quota class next Friday for a small group of women and their Children too.
Relieved because we'd made the quota a while ago when an email confirmation with a lady in the council gave the class the go ahead. But since then, I couldn't get hold of them! I began to wonder if it would come about or not. I'm pretty sure the Christmas period is the busiest time in the refuges.
Women's refuges have been on Women's hour Radio 4 recently because they are massively underfunded (familiar story) or was it the funding varies county by county? The issue is that the organisation of the refuges is local and yet the problem is particularly un-local. Firstly, sadly, abuse happens UK wide. Secondly, when someone in London is trying to escape abuse- they will probably need to be sent somewhere completely different to a refuge in a different locality. So having false organisational walls is not sensible. There was probably a sensible reason 15 years ago for making them local. And in 15 years time we will probably swing back that way. Cycles.
Anyway, the important thing is I'm off to the drawing board to design a mum and child yoga session focussed on self confidence and self acceptance!
