"what you think you become"- the Buddha is often quoted of having said this (or something along these lines. In fact it is thought that this could have come from "the mind is everything")...although the true origin of this saying is not known, the essence of the meaning is one in Buddhist thought....
Whether you have a regular yoga practice or not, you'll know that a lot of it is in the mind. Making it onto the mat on days when you just can't be bothered takes the mental energy and will, staying in those tricky poses means silencing the part of your mind telling you, you can't do it. We are usually stronger than we give ourselves credit for, this sometimes means going with our thoughts, leading our tired bodies onto the mat, or trying to overcome our thoughts, letting our body feel, safe in the knowledge that it's only temporary pain and we can sit through it. Either way, gently controlling the mind is important in yoga, and we feel the benefits of learning to work with our thoughts both on and off the mat.
Next month we launch our 30 day challenge. It can seem like a bit of a daunting commitment, but that's partly just your mind freaking out about something new- "what if I can't do it? What if I fall? What if everyone else is a yogi standing on their pinky finger whilst chanting?". Well firstly, we can assure you the last is not true, and we welcome all levels to our studio, plus...falling out can be the best part, it's only yoga, smile! As for the other worries, they're only worries if you let them be so, doubt tends to overwhelm us, and warp our self-perception, so we are telling you- "you can do it." AND It might even be really fun along the way....either way, you will come out having learnt something about yourself, and achieved a lot (a daily yoga practice is amazing..but not easy). We are not promising you'll be a pretzled up yogi by the end of the month, but we are promising you'll have learnt..and what's life about if not new experiences and learning.
