Restore are this completely amazing charity in Oxford providing recreational activities for people coping with harsh mental illnesses.
Until now they've done lots of arts, gardening and craft and now some yoga- as of tomorrow anyway.
It has been long in the arranging this class, and I hope it will become a class series. Credit to the charity, they have a very careful process to select volunteers and to train them, interviews, references, two days training, DRB check.
It's been trickier with me because I didn't want to be a normal volunteer I wanted to set up a new service- yoga I was adamant that I want to bring yoga to the charity- so that takes more organising obviously. I am happy to do normal volunteering too but I also had to make sure we'd try yoga. Also I have my contact details and location so incredibly obvious and everywhere. This is unusual, generally the volunteers keep personal information very much private and separate. The safe guarding is both ways say Restore.
One of the potential volunteers got really tangled up in the question of privacy during our training. I suppose I'm far more blasé about it because of my Doctor father, I remember popping into his work as a child maybe in half terms, into hospitals for mental health. His contacts are out there too apparently it is the modern way? I guess unlike for my charity work with steppin stones where I am as niave as can be about being homeless....I'm not as niave about having a mental illness and therefore not worried about Friday.
Or am I worried...? Being up at 00:22 Thursday morning may indicate otherwise?
Basically, the class had better be good. Not just good. Very good. I really know yoga can help you for many types of mental illness...as an 'ambassador' of yoga so to speak on Friday I really want to make sure it helps the people in Restore from Day 1.
So self pressure is keeping me up I guess! Nothing new then! Check in my blog to see how it goes on Friday at the Beehive.
