How long can you go without any of your tech? Try it out, you never know what or who you may find!
In the modern world it can be easy to be swept up in the constant stimulation of the 24/7 fast pace of life, which is largely enabled by technology. We are always doing something or thinking about what we must do next.
Books become a necessity of work, art a necessity of events (birthdays, parties etc) and music a background to other activities. When was the last time you sat down and put pen to paper just to see what your brain could create that day? Sat still and listened to music without doing anything else? Read a book because you wanted to get lost in a new world?
Now and again it can be immensely helpful to disconnect, give yourself a technology detox (if only for half a day). It is so easy nowadays to be constantly connected, to our phones, our laptops, the Internet. The pump of endorphins we get when we get a new message or notification keeps us going back, like an addict, so it can be a tricky habit to break. By setting aside even a few hours at a time where you don’t touch any of your tech you realize how reliant on it you are. Waiting for a friend who’s late, sitting on a train, even just walking through town, once you unplug you notice the impulsive reach for a phone in a moment of solitude or silence. We tend to remove ourselves from communal situations these days, choosing instead to jump into our social media worlds before braving the terrifying concept of chatting to a stranger at a bus stop in the real world (god forbid!)
Challenge yourself. Unplug.
