Our theme this January is enjoying the journey rather than putting crazy targets on yourself. Fairly apt given that at this time of year we always seem to try and perfect our 'imperfections', do something 'amazing', 'change' ourselves or generally do something that shows we don't accept ourselves.....NOT THIS JANUARY!
This January I challenge you to actually give yourself a break and have resolutions that you'll actually enjoy.
I'm looking to the right of this blog post and I see that I've been posting here since 2014 September! If it were a resolution at the time I bet I wouldnt have enjoyed it!
It's weird that the resolutions that you enjoy and put th pressure off yourself are actually the ones you succeed at! For example (in the yoga asana world) my flying pigeon. This pose has been illusive even before I spent the most part of 2015 growing a baby inside me and having post natal abs. So I took the pressure off and let my students and other teachers fly in this pose. I just generally worked at my hip opening level. And pop! last week I did it I flew!!!!
Granted I didnt look as good as this yogi! but it was there!
Off the mat, I have found this with piano pieces (playing the best I ever had, the first time I played the peice AFTER the exam!) jobs, work, nights out and many more. Pressure off. Enjoy the journey. Actually succeed.
It's an odd one this niyama (yoga precept) when I started doing yoga as a typical western style A-Type I just did not understand how having a goal could be wrong. And finally on discussions with my teachers about the philosophy I understood the subtlety of the message. It's not necessarily not having a goal, not having a new years resolution. It's about surrendering that goal to fate/god* and enjoying the journey. Now that started to make more sense.
Anyway. Contrary to most companies who are encouraging us to have goals which involve buying their products in January, we are saying at yoga quota. Chill out. Don't pressurise yourself for your New Years Resolutions. Come do yoga if you want to. And that is our theme this month.
Ironically we do have a new years resolution pass too. But NO PRESSURE ok? It's designed to just make the journey easier and cheaper.
What kind of journeys have you been doing recently?
Have you got any goals for January?
Do you feel the pressure too?
Love to hear from you as always x
*I use that word in the loosest sense
