Seems like we instinctively know that yoga is good for us. People of Oxford flocking to the little Yoga Quota studio, Oxford Yoga Teachers keen -very keen- to become Yoga Quota teachers and spread the word and charities happy to try it for size!
I just want to capture the 3 main reasons that I think is why yoga helps us. If you have more reasons then people comment below! we all have our own experience trying it and reasons why it has helped us. Click read more....
Time to yourself
I think it is so so rare that we give ourselves space to think, to be. Whether we're rushing about in our jobs making money, spending money, tablet, mobile, TV on. Juggle Juggle Juggle. When do we actually stop and breath, stop and do something purely to recharge our batteries? Stop to R.E.L.A.X. Even when you're sleeping the mobile is just there before you sleep, or TV for some. So yoga allows you to make time for yourself on the mat. Actually it doesnt even have to be about the postures you can do a bit of breathing or meditation too. This is not selfish by the way. It is just looking after yourself so you can look after others.
Enjoying the journey
Oh my! I'm as guilty as the worst person at chasing results for the sake of it. YEARs working towards ridiculously hard targets not for enjoyment but so that I could literally just achieve the hardest thing or just to say 'I've been to Cambridge' or 'I've been a consultant'. Foolish! Anyway we all do this. But... ironically...we get more results when we surrender the results. Sigh. Yoga teaches us to do this. A good teacher should remind you all the time. And the number of difficult things that you (I) can't do yet in yoga but journeying towards them is honestly the aim! Such as: Bakasana to handstand, counting to three in my meditation without my mind wandering! Ishvarapranidhana I'm not saying it's all light and happiness on the journey because that is niave. But you do enjoy far more on the journey when you at least stop to notice it.
I don't know how cynical you are about the spiritual side of yoga. However, it is undeniable that after an hour class, breathing in a controlled way, moving your body, you will feel peaceful. Floating home on a wave of endorphins is never to be ignored as a wonderful way that Yoga helps! Endorphins
