Yoga for Wellbeing will create space for people living with mental health conditions to enjoy a yoga practice with a focus on how specific yoga, breathing & mindfulness techniques can help support common wellbeing concerns. This class will be taught on a rotational basis by an amazing group of Yoga Quota studio teachers and badgeholders. The Yamas and Niyamas are the foundation of many of the yoga styles taught in studios across the world! You may think you have never heard of them, but you’ve probably encountered them in class – when your teacher encourages you to accept your practise, as it is in that very moment, or maybe using you practise to cultivate some compassion and self-kindness on the mat!
Miranda is teaching a 2 hour ‘Yamas and Niyamas: On and Off the Mat’ workshop on Sunday evening, 15th April, where we will start to unpack some of this yoga philosophy which has lead to the yoga we are probably most familiar with – our body based classes.
We will start to explore our physical yoga practise in the bigger picture of Patanjali’s 8 part yoga system, the philosophical tradition most modern yoga stems from, taking a closer look at the first 2 parts – the 5 Yamas and 5 Niyamas (Asana, the physical bit, is the third part!). The Yamas and Niyamas are a series of ideas, standards and practices that encourage us to cultivate a more compassionate, honest and empowered way of being in the world – towards ourselves and others!
Miranda will translate some of these ideas out of the traditional interpretation (as the approx. 4th century yoga methodology looks verrrrrrry different from our own), to make them relevant for contemporary living – and particularly how we can start to connect with them in our yoga practise!
We will be considering questions such as, how does Ahimsa, ‘Non-Violence’, help us to cultivate an attitude of compassion? What does Satya, ‘Truthfulness’, mean in our practise? How can we rest in Santosha, ‘Contentment’, and still encourage ourselves to strive towards challenging postures? Is Tapas, ‘Discipline’, really as scary as it sounds – or are we already practising this without realising? Just to scratch the surface…
This workshop will be a mix of theory with plenty of practise, and is designed to be interesting and accessible to all levels! No matter what your experience is with yoga (on and off the mat!). After we’ve got to grips with some of the ideas, we will move through a flow and start putting the theory into practise! You might be surprised at how these ideas are already showing up for you, or uncover a way to get to understand them a little bit better within the space of our physical practise!
