Audrey- As a social worker and yoga teacher, it was a blessing for me to be able to bring together two of my passions: yoga and connecting with people in need. With Yoga Quota I've had the chance to teach three yoga classes at the Porch Steppin’ Stone Centre, an organization that provides services to people who are experiencing or have experienced homelessness, or are vulnerably housed. I led two students through a gentle flow, starting with some sun salutations, followed by some grounding standing poses such as warrior 1 and warrior 2. We then moved on with a sequence of seated and reclined asanas such as Janu sirsasana, Paschimottanasana and Baddha konasana. In order to bring the practice full-circle and to integrate all the benefits of the asanas we have done, we ended with Savasana
The experience was about more than just teaching yoga. It was also meeting some of the dedicated Porch Steppin’ Stone Centre employees (project worker, cook, activity coordinator) that have the wellbeing of others at heart. It was also connecting with some members of the Centre on a deeper level, through yoga. I am looking forward to go back for the next two weeks to teach a few more classes. It is always rewarding to give some time to those in need and it is a blessing to be able to do so while sharing the benefits of yoga. - Audrey
