I began yoga in 2011 as a student because I was told by several people that it isn't a good idea to be writing all day long without doing any exercise to counteract my extended laptop use. Yoga did address my poor ergonomic habits but it also unexpectedly gave me much more than that.
To me, yoga is not just 'exercise' but a way of and honing in on our own wisdom. It teaches us to listen to ourselves and our bodies with kindness and curiosity. We gradually come to figure out how to respond to our own needs and balance different priorities moment-to-moment. We learn how to challenge ourselves while also cultivating a sense of ease, and how to mix discipline with playfulness. These are invaluable skills to take with us in our lives off the mat and I believe that everyone should be able to access yoga in ways that are safe, beneficial, and enjoyable to them.
