Anne- Last time the Big Issue yoga class was a flop. This time we are making lots of changes to make it better...
it was our first quota back in 2014 but no one came.
and the problem was the way I set it up!
yes I know plenty of people blamed 'unreliable homeless' people- which is just short sighted. This is where I let them down....
Actually I organised a class on a Saturday without really checking what day/time would suit vendors. This is peak selling time. Stupid me. Classes at the studio are scary if you are homeless even though I chatted to lots of vendors before hand. I didn't advertise at their office only online so for all a vendor knew I could have been a crazy, well meaning person in odd colourful leggings there to dupe/laugh at/fool/trick I don't know.
SO! this time I have worked hard with the staff at Big Issue to design a better offering and at the beginning of their health week on the 7th November, I will be at the office to introduce the concept and chat IF people are interested. Monday is when everyone comes in to pick up their magazines. I will be leaving a poster. AND I'm not offering a fixed class time that can easily not fit into people's lives I'm offering the referral scheme that we do with Mind Oxfordshire and other charities already where people are given class passes to practice alongside paying clients.
Ahhh! this is so valuable if your clawing your way back into 'normal' society after a massive trauma trying to find a community. Trying to find your feet.
I hate to have to mention this but I am responding to a theoretical critical reader here- my Yoga Quotees are amazing and no one has been concerned but I must emphasise that we have strict saftety policies for anyone in the studio and everyone is treated equally, The teachers are trained to deal with situations for paid clients or charity clients equally.
so have you ever realised how much of a faff not having a fixed abode is??? I have had to re design lots of the referral process for people who are homeless otherwise they wouldn't be able to apply because they wouldn't have an address or email address to use. It must hold them up in tonnes of situations
anyway that's jut a thought for y'all and I hope for a better take up this time round!
