The Yoga teacher will (or should) often remind you that it's not about the postures... but is this totally true? As another take, watch this Ted talk by Amy Cuddy and read this blog... how it could be about the postures too!
Thanks for my lovely thoughtful Yoga Quotee Emma Weisbord for pointing me to this Ted talk.
So her thoughts are that the Ted talk points out that if you have a positive, confident body language, you start to be more positive and confident. Watch tonnes of the yoga postures and see their opening, positive, confident language....maybe if Amy Cuddy is correct, and the social psychology is also making a difference during our yoga classes....use the power poses in the asana to feel more confident.
Good positive postures for you to do:
Utkata Konasana Goddess
Ustrasana Camel (heart opening)
My second reason why postures are also useful is less scientific- and a glib little aside.... If you are a yogi and a climber (like me) you will find the increased hip flexibility helps you get up those walls! Check out my picture from yesterday in South Wales, it's not quite Kathy of Instagram, but it is a useful reach all the same made possible from regular yoga practice!
