Emma-Jane - Mental health is important and it means so much to me. I was really pleased to teach yoga for Student Minds a charity to promote mental health for students.
In technical terms 'Mental Health' refers to your psychological and emotional wellbeing. But I always think it is really important to look after the self and give our minds and body time and space to deal with the everyday stresses, grief, guilt etc. It's important to realise that you are not alone. There are a lot of groups and local charities such as Student Minds that have been established to help support students with mental health and encourage a more open dialogue surrounding issues of mental health.
Before doing this charity class for student minds I sat down and thought about how yoga helps your mental health. I think Yoga creates a safe space. A space that allows you to love and accept your own body, a space for you to find balance and a sense of grounding. It teaches us about self-love and inner peace. It enables us to release tension and let-go of negative energy we often hold in the body.
The class was made up of 12 female students some of whom were entirely new to yoga. I had really positive feedback.
