I'm very excited that Yoga Quota is supporting Lewisham SUIT by providing a weekly yoga session for them for 2 months. People we will reach have suffered from drug or alcohol addictions- or still do, and their carers.
I've been looking into how exactly yoga helps with addiction recovery. My instant assumption was that it would give someone a healthier distraction or a boost of endorphins through activity.
So I posed this to the trusty google and found an article from a mental health specialist:
Mindbody green said that it was about finding something that felt good that wasn't about your addiction. But further than that, the breathing calms you (when you're anxious you're likely to go back to your habit) the spiritual side also helps you feel connected with a higher purpose which also helps.
Then it's much more than just asanas and physical exercise (why am I not surprised?)
SO I look forward to hearing from the teachers and clients at Lewisham SUIT with their personal take on whether and how yoga has helped them over the next two months.
Thanks to James Lander and Phoebe Allan who are doing these classes.
