You've seen it? But what does it mean and why do it???? Why should I care?
Mudra just means gesture or symbol. So we do these Mudra to get you
thinking about what it symbolises and even some texts go so far as to
suggest you promote the effects too by doing the mudra.
This particular mudra means a lot to a lot of people.
Take recent times- it means 'ok' which is actually a similar meaning
to the Aincent one!*
Or from a scientific point of view- it symbolises what we as humans
have above other ape type animals- our evolution to oppose the thumb,
make tools and evolve. I say 'have above the apes' in the loosest
sense as I do think even if we're more developed we should be equal.
So to my Darwinists out there doing this Mudra symbolises evolution,
knowledge and development.
To the more strict yogi, Hindu and Buddhist the Mudra is empowered with meaning
'Union'. The word yoga itself means union too** so the thumb symbolises
the universal everything and the fore finger your internal self then
they're joining together because after all they're the same thing***.
When you realise this union or realise they are the same thing, you
get to self realisation which is the goal of yoga. So this mudra means
a lot and it has for millennia.
So just take the interpretation you want to and use this symbol. I often get
us doing it in tree (Vrksasana).
If to you it means 'ok'! Stand proud in tree and proclaim to the world
you are ok! If to you it symbolises your evolution stand proud in tree
squeeze your finger and thumb and proudly express how evolved and
beautiful you are! If it means you aspire to be self realised and
joined with universal energy- proclaim that, and well hopefully even promote that self realisation by doing the mudra.
By the way if you're in the ok camp and you're diving- dont do a
thumbs up instead it makes your diving instructor get you to the
* If you assume that you'll feel 'ok' when you are self realised which has to e the case right?
**plus or minus some interpretations
*** Both philosophies/religions agree that there's a universal energy type god and a self. One thinks you are reunited so actually separated now. The other belives you're not separated even now- but you just realise that you are one. Either way....
